Autopay lets you automatically pay invoices on a schedule of your choosing. One feature you can enable is a “Set a max amount per autopay payment” (or maximum) amount for each autopay run. This ensures you won’t be charged above a limit you find comfortable - useful if you ever receive an unusually large invoice.
How "Set a max amount per autopay payment" Works
- Normal Invoices Under the Max: If your invoice total is below your max, Autopay simply pays the full balance.
-
Invoices Exceeding the Max: Autopay will only pay as much as your max allows.
- Partial Pay ON: If the final invoice pushes you above your limit, Autopay pays part of it to reach the cap. The remaining balance stays unpaid until you or your vendor address it separately.
- Partial Pay OFF (Only pay whole invoices): Autopay will skip that invoice entirely so it doesn’t exceed your max. You’ll need to pay the skipped invoice manually or by adjusting your autopay plan.
Example:
If you set a $5,000 max for weekly autopay and you have $5,200 due that week, Autopay will pay only $5,000. If "Only pay whole invoices" is off, it’ll cover $5,000 worth of the total $5,200, leaving a $200 balance. If "Only pay whole invoices" on, it might pay certain invoices in full and skip the rest if they would exceed $5,000.
Do I Even Need a Max?
- No Limit: If you’re comfortable paying your entire invoice balance every time, leave the max blank. That way, autopay never gets blocked by a too-low limit.
- Max: If you’re concerned about unexpectedly large invoices, set a cap that’s 2x your typical invoice total. This helps catch bigger-than-normal charges while allowing day-to-day variations.
Adjusting Your Max Amount
If you find you’re frequently hitting your limit - or you never come close - you can always edit your autopay plan:
- Login to your Wholesail account by clicking here.
- Click on Autopay on the left hand side of your page.
- Select Set up autopay.
- Click Edit (if your vendor enables editing).
- Toggle Set a max amount per autopay payment on.
- Set your Max payment amount to your preferred maximum amount.
- Confirm any partial-pay settings, then save your changes.
If your vendor doesn’t allow editing, you may need to cancel your current plan and set up a new one.
FAQ
Q: If my max is $5,000 but the invoice total is $300, will Autopay charge $5,000 anyway?
A: No. Autopay only pays the actual invoice amounts. A $300 invoice will cost $300, even if your max is $5,000.
Q: What happens if partial pay is enabled and my invoice is more than the max?
A: Autopay will partially pay the invoice up to your limit, leaving a remaining balance for you to handle manually.
Q: Can I remove my max altogether?
A: Yes. Toggling off Set a max amount per autopay payment removes the cap. Autopay will then pay all open invoices in full.
Q: Why might I want to set a lower max amount?
A: It’s a safeguard against unexpectedly large invoices - like a surprise bulk order or unplanned charges - so you can review them before paying.
